The B-I-B-L-E

We have a God crisis over here at the Simms' household.  In our nightly prayers my littlest guy (3) has been wanting to pray to Santa as well as God!  Yes, this truly is the season for little ones to be worried that Santa knows everything on their list, but we teach that Santa is pretend in our family.

Somehow in all the madness of our culture with super heroes, fairy tales and imaginations galore it is more and more a challenge to teach our children that God is real.  Unless we are diligent and creative and pray A LOT we are not going to be able to direct our kids to learning about God and His Word with all the distractions of our media-frenzied world.

Reading the Bible is a daily part of our school day.  With a 5 and 3 year old this can be quite interesting though.  We have read Bible stories, memorized a few scriptures with hand motions and all.  We have little devotional books that teach character qualities.  We even reenacted David and Goliath, and as seen below we "put on" the fruits of the spirit.

Talking about God is part of our everyday, but I desire for my kids to really have The Word within them.  These few things listed above only take me so far.

How do you teach your children The Word?  Do you have any advice for a mother with young children that you wish you had done with your children or can you think of things you wish your parents had done with you?

Teaching A-B-C's and 1-2-3's are important, but getting the B-I-B-L-E in them is at the top of my list!

  1. It looks and sounds like you're doing a great job!

There are a number of things we do...just to keep His Word in the forefront of our minds...

We have the Bible on CD, so I have that playing a lot...just in the background while we're doing everyday things. Praise and worship music is our choice...to dance...in the car...etc. We talk about scripture and/or what God would probably think...in just about everything...when she gets hurt (feelings or physically), if her character is not on par in a certain situation...

Last year, we found a TON of Barbie-type dolls at Wal-Mart. We had NO money, but we didn't want to miss out on them, so we scooped up all they had (like $200 worth..haha). When you push a button on them, they tell their story and also have a couple of scripture to help you memorize. They're fun!

Playing out David & Goliath sounds fun. Give us some more tips!

  2. Wow what a great question. I did not grow up in the church but since I had my son in my tummy, I have always wanted him to have more then I did. One of those things is the church. Small groups are great and "Sunday school" so to speak. Going to church events with your kids. My son only knows a very small part of my upbringing and when he asks me questions on it. I tell him that God has a plan for me and I need to trust him. I do not know what the plan is but I am sure it is for the best of me. To be honest sometimes, I think God himself speaks through me because I can not recall some of the things I have told him. From the time my son was going to kindergarten up to 4 grade we have been with the church. Then recently we moved to NW OKC and were invited to LifeChurch.TV...My son was not sure at first if he wanted to go but now he wishes he could live up there. So I guess the bottom line would be to get them into church things. This way your children will make new friends and will grow with him as well.

  5. Ok, thanks guys. Some kind of recording that would play back would be great! I'm sure I could find something like that that boys would like. Totally agree with the going to church thing! Course not all church kids are there for the right reason so I think being involved with your kids is the way to go. Keys for Kids . . . totally gonna check that out! I appreciate the feedback!

  6. I love the putting on the fruits of the spirit. I'll be borrowing that idea! I'm in the same boat. Looking for creative ideas that will help write the word on their hearts. Or rather engrave it into their hearts. I love the ideas above. Great post! We've started doing little drama's over some of the bible lessons. It's fun---and gets out some stored up energy! :)
