Oh, Brother!

Seeing and hearing the interaction between my two youngest sons is sometimes a nightmare, but also a blessing. They are in their teens now, Kody, 15 and Jacob, 13. Hearing them laugh about a shared experience at church, teasing one another about girls, watching them challenge each other at basketball—these are all daily experiences that either send me over the edge, or get me to laughing. These two keep me young and make me old.

I’m watching them change from boys into young men.

Yeah, they fuss. They fight. They call each other names. They are enemies and best friends—sometimes within the same minute.

They are brothers.

Do you have a sibling who is like that to you?

I think I’ll call my sister today.

  1. Mine older two boys are 5 and 8 and they do the same thing on a younger level. I can relate...some times it drives me crazy and sometimes I love it!

  2. I'm an only child so I have no experience to draw on. But I see our kids best buddies and then at times quite upset with each other. Thanks for sharing so I can see my kids are developing normally.

I enjoyed your "One of those days" posts...I can relate.

  3. I don't have a sibling like that. I'm a the lone girl in my family. However, I want that for Seth and Noah so we talk about it all the time.

I remember Katie and I were the same way! We hated each other and loved each other... we hated that we loved each other and loved that we hated each other... haaaaahhaaa!!

  8. Aww. Kody and Jake. I always wanted a brother!

My relationship with my sister Arica (3 years my junior) is like the one Anna described with Katie. Arica always wanted to tag along, and I hated that she wanted to tag along, but I secretly wanted her to want to be around me, because it made me feel important.

Now that we are older, we fight less (at least about stupid stuff). Now we just get into "heated debates" about our thoughts on home mortgages, marriage, babies, '5-yr plans', etc. Maybe one day when we are on the 'same level', we'll stop arguing...but then again...

  11. I came from a family of only my sister, which is 3.5 years older, and myself. I'm really hoping and looking forward to having a larger family. I would have loved having a bunch of siblings growing up...and a brother to play basketball with, even with all the fighting that comes with that.

  12. You know it's funny because through the years we have thought different ones of us are so alike, but it's seemed to change some as we get older & see different qualities develop. Because of age I was closer to Andrew & Ali growing up, but now I feel the same closeness with each sibling. It's so nice to have 6 to chose from. They each bring a different thing to the relationship & are there for me in different ways. I hated it most of the time growing up, but now I love it! And I love seeing our kids grow up together!

  13. Natalie- that button came from much trial and error. I think I got it from feedburner. Glad you have such a good relationship with your brother. I always wished I had one.
Michael - I have to recommend large families--not that we originally planned that, but we were called. It's been quite the ride.
Erin - Sweet words--it's been a pleasure and a blessing to see you guys grow even closer.

Hey - 3 of my daughters posted comments today! Cool. And 2 of my adoptees!!
