A Mother's Prayer

For years, I have kept this prayer on the mirror in my closet where I can see it every morning. I remember plenty of times when I needed to sneak back to my closet to read it again, for my sake and the sake of my children!

Oh give me patience when tiny hands
Tug at me with their small demands.
And give me gentle and smiling eyes;
Keep my lips from sharp replies.
And let not fatigue, confusion or noise
Obscure my vision of life's fleeting joys.
So when, years later, my house is still--
No bitter memories its room may fill.

  1. Oh, this is so perfect and such a reflection of many of my prayers right now! How I want to always respond to my children in love and not in frustration just because things are caotic! Thank you so much...I am printing this out and posting by my bathroon mirror right now!

  3. Glad you girls enjoyed this--but to be clear---I didn't write it. Sorry if I misled anyone---It says "anonymous"--I'll fix that now.

    I hope it helps you as much as it has me. It's still a good reminder even though the tiny hands here are now my grands!

  4. I have about 5 different verses hanging up on my mirror in my bathroom... all of them are about love. It's a good, daily reminder.

  5. That is good, even when you're not a parent...Oh, yes most certainly... a scripture I look at often is one that your daughter used actually to help me through a desperate time and it has become one that I share often. Matthew 11:28-30 28"Come to Me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. 29Take My yoke upon you and learn from ME, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

  6. this is one of my favorites!

    Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return. ~Mary Jean Iron

  8. I found this prayer many many years ago on parchment and decoupaged it on a piece of wood. It hung for many years over my sink and as I was doing dishes (5 children and no dishwasher)I would say this prayer and breathe deep. We moved out of that tiny apartment and I know it is buried somewhere in my attic. I think I will dig it out and make copies my children with children. A beautiful prayer, thank you for bringing back those memories
